Crossing the frontline of time and space and exploring the life evolution process of the earth for 4.5 billion years in total -- Mooc Westbound Synchronous Class" in General Geology of Zhejiang University-Guizhou Education University

2023-03-01

In order to actively respond to the call of the Department of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education to Mooc Westbound, and further promote the reform and innovation of information-based teaching means and teaching methods, Zhejiang University's provincial online and offline first-rate courses and the provincial curriculum ideological and political demonstration course General Geology, after the launch of the Mooc Westbound Synchronous Class project on December 8, 2021, On November 23, 2022, the Mooc Westbound Synchronous Classroom teaching activity was carried out with Guizhou Education University through the cross-campus live broadcast interactive network of Wisdom Tree again.

Both schools attach great importance to the teaching activity of Mooc Westbound Synchronous Classroom. Professor Shen Zhongyue, the leader of the undergraduate teaching supervision group of Zhejiang University (also the team teacher of the Mooc course of General Geology of Zhejiang University), and Professor Zheng Jian, the supervisor of the undergraduate teaching school of Guizhou Education University, delivered a speech at intervals. After listening to the class for 2 hours, they reviewed the teaching design, curriculum ideological and political integration, case analysis, the interaction between teachers and students was reviewed in detail. The teaching quality and effect of synchronous classroom have been affirmed and praised by the school supervisors of both sides.

In this synchronous class, Professor Wang Haizhen, the course leader, taught the contents of geological age and earth evolution in the course of General Geology to the students of the School of Environment and Resources at 1B-315, east of the teaching discussion room of Zijingang Campus of Zhejiang University. At the same time, 95 undergraduates of the 2022 grade of geography science major of Guizhou Education University had the same class in the school's remote live interactive smart classroom, Successfully realized another live air teaching in the two places.

In order to bring a wonderful synchronized class to the students of the two schools, the teachers of the two schools, Professor Wang Haizhen, Professor Shen Zhongyue, Associate Professor Xu Chong, Associate Professor Li Songtao and the Wisdom Tree team, carefully discussed the teaching content, teaching methods, student display, interactive program design, etc. before the class, and made full preparation for the class.

Use the latest cases to decipher the ancient geological history

At the beginning of the lecture, Professor Wang Haizhen introduced the emergence and extinction of dinosaurs in the Jurassic Park to guide students into the course theme and attract students' attention. The course mainly explains the geological age and its determination method, the gold nail and its significance in geological research, the formation of the earth's sphere, and several important biological evolution events in geological history. The cited cases include the latest 70 scientific issues in the frontier fields of earth science published in October 2022, the international chronostratigraphic table, and the report on finding the gold nail on the earth published in Guizhou Daily in September 2022, In February 2022 and October 2021, the lunar sample of Chang'e V published in Nature Astronomy and Science journals was dated 2.03 billion years and the proposed crescent chronology function, and the spatiotemporal relationship between the evolution of Jehol biota and the destruction of the North China Craton published in PNAS journals in August 2021. For example, Professor Zheng commented that teaching has more than textbooks. Through vivid typical cases, students can not only better understand and master the knowledge of ancient geological history, but also play a role in guiding students to focus on cutting-edge science and expanding their horizons.

The ideological and political integration of the curriculum inspires students to think deeply

In the synchronous classroom, the course content and the course ideology and politics are naturally and closely integrated to inspire students to think deeply, stimulate learning interest and potential, and pay attention to curriculum education.

In explaining the representative of the geological year and the contents of gold nails, taking the 11 gold nails established by Chinese scientists, which account for one seventh of the world's total, and the gold nails in Zhejiang and Guizhou provinces as examples, we not only learned the significance and importance of gold nails in the history of geological evolution, but also highlighted the rapid development of China's scientific research and reached the international advanced level through the hard work of Chinese scientists, perception and inheritance of the professional spirit, patriotic dedication and national feelings of Chinese scientists. When explaining the latest achievements of China's lunar exploration project and the evolution of the earth's sphere, from the composition and vertical stratification of the modern atmosphere, the introduction of the ionosphere where the Chinese manned space station Tiangong is located, to the stepping on the stars and looking up at the earth in the video of the Shenzhou 13 crew's spaceflight work in December 2021, all show the development of China's manned space industry and the pride of the world's space power, and inspire students to strengthen China's confidence and national self-confidence, etc! As Professor Shen commented, the integration of ideological and political points in these courses is very natural, which can inspire students to learn skills well, win glory for the country, and play a very good role in inspiration and education.

At the same time, from Clare Peterson to the first person who measured the age of the earth to more than 40 years of anti-lead fighter cases, from the standard fossil to the report on the deposition and environmental records of the plastic layer in the journal Nature Review Microbiology in 2020, from the five mass extinctions in geological history to thinking about how to avoid the early occurrence of the sixth mass extinction event, and what changes will happen to the earth and its biological structure after 300 million years, From the different angles of geoscientific thinking of taking the present as the ancient, taking the ancient as the present/the future as the future to taking the history as a mirror, looking at the future and cherishing the present, we not only explored the life evolution process of the earth for 4.5 billion years with students, but also helped to cultivate students' dialectic geoscientific thinking method and the earth system scientific concept with the harmonious coexistence of human and nature as the core, and set up correct ecological awareness, the sense of responsibility to protect the earth's home and promote the sustainable development of mankind.

Students' group theme exploration and brilliant classroom interaction

With the theme of the latest 70 scientific issues in the frontier field of earth science, students can freely choose topics and explore in teams, from extracurricular literature review, PPT production to classroom reporting and communication, from knowledge learning to group cooperation, and comprehensively cultivate students' comprehensive ability. In the synchronous class, three undergraduate students of Agricultural Resources and Environment of Zhejiang University, Chen Futao, Qian Lei and Wang Suyuan, shared the group view of Academician Zhou Zhonghe on the question How did modern birds evolve their unique flight ability?. According to the classics, the humorous and witty talk about the ancestors of birds and the origin of bird flight has constantly aroused the resonance and laughter of the students. Is there any relationship between chicken and dinosaur?, chicken or egg first? - dinosaurs first, dinosaurs were extinct in the great disaster at the end of the Cretaceous. Why can birds survive as descendants of dinosaurs? and other questions were exchanged in the cloud in real-time Q&A and zero distance. The classroom interaction atmosphere was active, stimulating students to think and diffuse thinking.

In addition, Professor Wang Haizhen interspersed the interaction between teachers and students in his lectures. The content is moderately difficult and can arouse students' thinking. At the end of the synchronization class, the undergraduate students majoring in geographical science of Guizhou Normal University immediately asked, Now we are concerned about the harm caused by climate warming, but the cold climate will also bring harm. How can we avoid the cold climate? Now that climate warming affects the living environment of human beings, I wonder if I can live underground? What rock strata are more suitable for living? and other questions have brought the classroom atmosphere to a climax. Professor Wang guided the students to think about these problems by reviewing the glacial and interglacial periods of geological history, greenhouse gas emissions, the vertical temperature decline rate of about 0.6 ℃ for every 100 meters of increase in the air temperature near the ground, and the ground temperature gradient of about 3 ℃ for every 100 meters of increase in the temperature below the surface normal temperature layer, and pointed out the importance of understanding and applying knowledge between different chapters.

Say in the melody of Right Here Waiting - see you in the synchronous class next year!! This year's synchronous class is perfect.

Education is a cloud that drives another cloud, and one soul calls another soul. If it can play a small role every time, it is hoped that it can bring butterfly effect to the education cause in the west, innovate teaching and research patterns, jointly build high-quality teaching resources sharing between the eastern and western universities, and achieve deeper cooperation and common development in teaching, scientific research, talent training and other aspects.
