Global Distinguished Chair Program: Singapore Academy of Engineering Academician Wang Rong's “Environmentally Functional Materials” Course Completed Successfully

The “Global Distinguished Chair Program” is a teaching program established by ZJU for overseas renowned teachers. Focusing on the overall goal of talent cultivation, which is “to cultivate high-quality innovative talents and leaders with global competitiveness who have all-round development in morality, intelligence, physical fitness and aesthetics”, the program aims to bring together the top international teaching resources, create a group of gold courses with the characteristics of ZJU and global influence, and help cultivate the top innovative talents.
From November 18 to December 6, 2024, the full English course “Environmental Functional Materials” by Prof. Wang Rong, member of Singapore Academy of Engineering, Global Distinguished Chair of Zhejiang University, was successfully completed. The course was attended by more than 50 senior undergraduate and graduate students from all over the university majoring in environment, chemical industry, polymers and materials, etc. After three weeks of study, the students mastered the basic knowledge of membrane separation, material properties and its practical application in environmental protection and sustainable development, and possessed the ability to solve practical problems, which can lay a solid theoretical foundation for their future research and work in environmental protection and resource utilization. Prof. Wang Rong's course has clear teaching objectives, teaching design and logic, starting from the exposition of the basic knowledge of membrane, combined with practical application problems to introduce in-depth study of membrane material properties and performance parameters.
Through a variety of teaching methods such as video demonstrations and physical displays, Prof. Wang Rong led more than 50 students from different majors of the university into the world of cutting-edge knowledge about “membranes”. In addition to the knowledge transfer, the students will also take the initiative to put forward their own ideas and doubts under the guidance of Prof. Wang.
In the unique discussion class, around the membrane performance design, material selection and other topics, students actively express their ideas about membrane design; Prof. Wang will also summarize the knowledge points of the course in a timely manner and examples with practice, in the face of the students' doubts, Prof. Wang hand in hand with the students to lead the operation of the theory and practical, so that students can be able to deduce the case by example.
Through the course of “Environmental Functional Materials”, students have learned the professional knowledge of membrane separation technology, further cultivated the awareness of environmental protection and sense of social responsibility, opened up the international vision, and set up the concept of sustainable development; through exploring the application of membrane separation technology in environmental protection, they have enhanced their understanding of the importance of the construction of national ecological civilization.
In the future, it is hoped that students will further utilize their innovative thinking, comprehensively apply multidisciplinary knowledge to solve practical problems, and enhance their comprehensive interdisciplinary abilities. Through teamwork and project practice, they will contribute their individual strength in the collective and cultivate the spirit of cooperation and social commitment. In the end, they will not only master the technology, but also apply it to the national environmental protection cause, and become the pillars of promoting green development.
